How To Find Out If Your Dog Is Overweight.
Doing a rib test on your dog is the easiest way to find out whether your dog is overweight. Take a look at our video to learn what to look for to ensure your dog stays at a healthy weight.
It could be a possibility that your dog is overweight and we would like to talk about a few things that you can do!
The first thing you can do is the rib test. There are a few simple steps you must take. To start with make sure your dog is standing still. Then run your hand on the back bone, with a light bit of pressure you should be able to locate it. Once you have located it you will be looking to feel for a little layer of fat.
The next step is to repeat this action on the area of your dogs waist and ribs. Again you are looking to feel a little layer of fat. It is really simple and easy. It shouldn't take you too much time.
You could always have your dog weighed. Having your dog weighed all the time can be a little concerning though. They will often look at a specific breeds weight at a Kennel Club. Every dog is different, most of us have pet dogs and they may not be the best specimen with regards to breed.
So your dog may not be exactly 20 or 22 kilos but don't stress about this too much. Just see whether your dog is a healthy weight for their size. For example we have had 20 kilo Labradors in our store and we have had 30 kilo Labradors. They were equally as healthy as each other.
Don't worry too much about your dogs physical weight. The rib test is a nice simple way to tell whether your dog is a reasonable weight.
