How to change your puppies diet!
Hi everyone, I'm Allan from Newlands Pets and something we're being asked all the time is - how to change the diet for a puppy you might have just got?
The majority of people's puppies come to their new home, around eight-nine weeks, and often they will come wanting a type of food their breeder has put them on.
I always think it's a good idea for at least a couple of days to go with that puppy food that the breeder has chosen. Then you might choose to stay with that forever and that's obviously completely up to you. Very often people want to change the diet, and whether you're upgrading it, or it's not really working for you or the dog.
It's fairly easy to move a food and puppies are quite resilient. Get In touch and we can start talking about what you want to feed. I always think it's important to start from, how you would choose to feed the dog. So if you want feed kibble because that's what fits in with your lifestyle that's fine.
The transition period tends to be fairly simple, it's not really any different whether it's a puppy or an adult. What we do is we take the old food on the assumption you've got some of the old food left, and we reduce the amount of the old food you're feeding and add a little bit of the new food for two to three days. I always think when you're feeding the puppy, give 25% of the new food and 75% of the old food. And then so on and so forth. Those getting on well we start making a transition a bit more. Eventually you're at seven-nine days in, depending, on your situation, and you're 100% on the new food and away you go.
